Japanese Pro Wrestling Legend Mitsuharu Misawa Remembered

Mitsuharu Misawa died in Hiroshima, Japan earlier this year less than a week before his 47th birthday. He was in a tag team match for his Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion with Go Shiozaki against Bison Smith and Akitoshi Saito. Saito hit a back suplex on Misawa, which appeared to knock him unconscious. Medical staff attempted to revive him in the ring, but when CPR failed he was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Initial reports in the Japanese media suggest that he was pronounced dead at the hospital, but a number of eyewitness accounts have speculated that he may have died in the ring.

That’s at least a small bit of solace amid the tragedy of Misawa’s death–he died in the ring doing what he loved, and what he did better than just about anyone on the planet. Not like Owen Hart died in the ring, doing a stupid stunt in a silly character that he was reportedly assigned as punishment for refusing to go along with a storyline he felt demeaning, but working the kind of brutally stiff, athletically realistic match that got a generation hooked on Japanese wrestling.

A top level amateur wrestler in high school, his skill gained the attention of All Japan Pro Wrestling president Shohei Giant Baba. He made his professional debut in’81, and got his first big break in’84 when he was chosen as the second Tiger Mask replacing Satoru Sayama. In’90, he had his longtime tag team partner (and occasional rival) Toshiaki Kawada unmask him.

Misawa would wrestle as himself from then on, and become an even bigger star in the process. In June,’90 he became one of the top stars in All Japan Pro Wrestling when he defeated Jumbo Tsuruta. That match was his first main event appearance at the venue Cheap Trick made famous in America, the Nippon Budokan. He soon faced Triple Crown Champion Stan Hansen in an unsuccessful challenge for the title, and would become arguably the biggest native star in Japanese pro wrestling for the next decade.

Hed have legendary battles against Kawada, Hansen, Kenta Kobashi, Jun Akiyama and Steve Dr. Death Williams in singles competition. Hed also become a force on the tag team scene along with Kawada facing Williams and Terry Gordy along with Tsuruta and Akira Taue. Misawa would continue as a mainstay in AJPW until the early part of this decade. After the death of Giant Baba, he left to establish Pro Wrestling NOAH. He would serve as the companys president while wrestling a full time schedule until his death.

Japanese pro wrestling served as an introduction for many American fans into shoot fight sports and MMA. Before the Internet, fans would trade videotapes to stay up on the latest matches from Japan and along with Jushin Thunder Liger and The Great Muta Keiji Mutoh it safe to say that Misawa is one of the wrestlers most responsible for getting a generation of American fans hooked on the product. Were it not for the subculture he created in America, later wrestling promotions like Ring of Honor and MMA promotions like the UFC wouldn’t have had a ready made audience to tap into.

Scotland And The Clans Of The Highlands

The Highlands of Scotland were well written about for their wars and betrayals and it is certainly accurate that from the reign of James IV in the 1490’s existence in the Highlands was somewhat tumultuous. In 1493, James went against the strong chiefs of the MacDonald Clan and forfeited the MacDonald Lord of the Isles in favour of himself and the Campbell Clan. Therefore the Campbell’s took over as powerhouse in that time at the expense of the MacDonalds.

Issues came about not merely with the MacDonalds but also with several other Scottish clans because of this unhealthy power divide that the Campbells held over everyone else. The Campbell were in such a position that they could buy up readily available land and charge a kind of rent upon anybody who wanted to utilize the area for cows or sheep. The MacLeans were especially aggrieved Clan. As a sidenote here, the word Clan originates from the Gaelic word “clann” which actually signifies “children”.

It would seem to be this could mean that any member inside a clan were closely associated however this was not necessarily the case. Only the higher echelons of a specific clan were linked to the chiefs. Everyone else merely considered the chief as the leader instead of as a relative as such.

The particular system of clans came from a mixture of early Celtic idealism and feudal ways, the main point being the ownership of lands. The clan chief was the owner of the lands of the clan and he had the capability to grant the land out to his fellow clans men. The status of a clan nonetheless wasn’t necessarily about the amount of land that the family owned or operated but more concerning the number of males the clan could possibly muster to be able to fight in war. Because of the Highlands being extremely militaristic they would be looked to for fighting men during the time of conflict between the King and his opponents. For the highland clans this became problematic because they often became embroiled in lowland politics.

When James VI came to be King however, civil war broke out. When he called on the clans to assist the Campbells decided otherwise. It was not just the Campbells who were to cause issues for James – he extirped (sent away) the clan MacGregor in 1603, and in 1609 he introduced new laws in to force which limited all clan chiefs from utilizing and abusing their earlier powers.

From SFO to Union Square

Like any self-respecting Englishman, I have lived abroad. That is to say, I have lived in the United States and embodied the cliche of the Englishman in not-so sunny California. Rather than cater to too broad of a cliche, I subscribed myself to the fog-prone coasts of Northern California. Granted, this was not as radical a break from convention and expectations as I had thought, but nonetheless, I was spared a horrid sunburn for the five years I lived and worked in and around San Francisco.

A turbulent flight delivered me to SFO airport, where I somehow managed to have myself conveyed to an area I would come to find out was called South San Francisco — not to be confused with the City by the Bay itself (and I do apologize for acquiescing to the use of pseudonyms). I sought shelter in many of the South San Francisco hotels, but finally settled on the one that would actually accept pounds Sterling as payment.

The peninsula seemed like a nothing more than a jolly old jaunt — at least from the naive perspective of a burgeoning ex-patriot with no sense of scale. Those of you who are familiar with the Bay Area, of course, know it is impossible to see the entire area in a day, much less by bus or metro. Nonetheless, I had to find out the hard way, as they say. The hard way began with a metro ride (known as the Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART) to the center of the city, Union Square.

The year was 2000, or there about, and Union Square was in full, capitalistic bloom. It had been cordoned off for a year or so in the late Nineties to accommodate a massive gentrification project. Apparently, I would come to find out from ex-hippie who bore witness to the literal ups and downs of the city, that the square had fallen on hard times. Like it’s Eastern cousin, Union Square had suffered a debased, pornographic existence for almost two decades. And, like Times Square, it had been identified as having tremendous marketing potential.

Nothing could have prepared me for the utter denouement awaiting me as I made my way ground-ward from the bowels of the BART system. I believe the first storefront I happened to gawk at was the Apple Store, which occupied two stories of prime real estate. At every turn I was reminded — mind you, I had just arrived from London — by how incredibly similar this fable city was to my hometown. This, I thought, was a rather anti-climactic realization. Little did I know I would have my fair share of denouements to come.

It is my sincere hope that you may experience the kindness of South San Francisco hotels in the flesh, and with enough time on your hands to appreciate the entire region.
